In all honest, at least in my view, Nirvana were far more ground breaking at the time than Suede were. True, they were doing stuff that their peers were not really doing, but in terms of sound they weren't as shockingly new as Nirvana were.

I think that the Bernard years and the Richard years are very different, we're talking about 2 different Suedes here.

Suede started as a ground breaking band that had statements and something to say. It appealed people and touched many hearts out there.

The coming up suede was something completely different, it wasn't less good or anything, just different, and it made some new fans.

The die hard fans stayed cause again, Coming Up was a great album, but even today they all long to this band that shocked everyone, the band that broke conventions and took the attention from Nirvana a bit back then. That's the old Suede, the Bernard Suede. It's a fact.

I think he looks back a bit too much sometimes - he's clearly quite regretful about some things. Anyone can lose focus though, or find themselves simply in a situation which they don't quite know how to work.

I think The Tears was a bit doomed from the start. It is a shame they didn't go onto make a second record, but then again I don't think they ever would've stopped being asked "do you like each other", or other things related to Suede.

With the debut album, Brett clearly just didn't really know what sort of record to make - it is all over the place, but not (in my view) in a good way. I think the multiple versions of 'Back to You', an OK but not amazing song, was a bit like airing your dirty laundry in public. First the (in my view superior) Pleasure version, then the rather AOR rock version, then the duet version on Wilderness. It doesn't smack of an artist who is very confident in their work. The transition from that lack of confidence to 'Black Rainbows' is amazing.

With 'A New Morning' I think he was shocked, embarrassed and dissapointed by the #24 UK chart placing. They'd had THREE number one albums prior to that, so it isn't ever going to be seen as progress is it? The sad thing is, with a revised tracklist and the move of releasing 'Obsessions' as the first single, I think it would've been a bigger success.

Still, I am glad the Coming Up + Head Music line up are back together and working on new stuff, I genuine prefer that incarnation of Suede, though of course I love the Bernard era too. I think it is like liking two eras of Roxy Music. Thing is, it is fashionable to say the Bernard years are better... and there's not much you can do about that, other than to just ry and listen to any new music without prejudice.

Do you think they (or perhaps just Brett) blame their (him-)selve(s) for the last album not being a huge succes? I mean it is all rather 'relative' isn't it? I know quite few people who did like new morning. Not sure how they feel about it - bad enough so they might have some drive to compensate things by a new album? I did not get the impression they felt it was a bad album. But I haven't by far heard/read all there is to know.

Hm! When I turned 30 people told me 'old enough to know what you want, and still young to actually pursue this'. I think the same applies for the 40s. But I do wonder if there is such a thing really like 'wasted time'. You could argue there is a point in everything you do - so also in the lows. But I won't bore this forum with my views on these matters. It is relevant though when we want to determine if there is a drive for Brett to compensate things or not. Perhaps he simply operates from the present, not looking back at all.

I think Brett probably just wants to get on with it (Suede). They have a bit of a point to prove, and clearly him and the rest of the band were not exactly happy that their last album was the confused (though not 'awful') 'A New Morning'. They didn't go out with a bang, they just sort of fizzled out as they and their fans seemed to basically lose interest. I think it is inevitable with any band, or artist.

Now that Brett is passed the 40 bench mark, and obviously with regret for some time wasted (via drugs, or the wrong decisions...whatever) he has a great sense of urgency, a fire in his belly, and really the best work comes from that - so watch this space. I am quietly confident that Suede should be able to come up with some excellent stuff. Here's hoping they can find the right producer to coax the very best out of them!

So. Ok. I was wondering (it was Tuesday again apparently) what motives could convince BA to either promote Black Rainbows or to abandon this and focus on Suede.. I mean in the end it is his call to opt for a project, but which reasons are a plea for either the solo thing or the band? Is it about earning money to create some sort of buffer - assuming the band is more lucrative at this point? Was it coincidence? And is it true festivals bring in more cash than concerts?

Btw, to avoid hermeneutic flaws: I'm not expressing a preference and/or a (to my knowledge) hidden feeling on the chosen scenario. I'm just a bit curious.
