Dear Strangers

The most eagle-eyed amongst you may have been numbed with excitement to discover that Brett has made another list of what he has been taking into his brain and that that list has been made public in the 'CULTURE' section of this very website.

In case you wanted to investigate further and make a judgement on the sanity of the selections on such a list (judgements could include: "Hmmm...That looks really good", "What is he thinking?" or, simply, "Well, i don't know....maybe...") you can follow these links in order to quench your ignorance...

Motives for BA or Suede (8 replies)

So. Ok. I was wondering (it was Tuesday again apparently) what motives could convince BA to either promote Black Rainbows or to abandon this and focus on Suede.. I mean in the end it is his call to opt for a project, but which reasons are a plea for either the solo thing or the band? Is it about earning money to create some sort of buffer - assuming the band is more lucrative at this point? Was it coincidence? And is it true festivals bring in more cash than concerts?

Btw, to avoid hermeneutic flaws: I'm not expressing a preference and/or a (to my knowledge) hidden feeling on the chosen scenario. I'm just a bit curious.

Anyone has ideas on this?

Hello all,

Like so many others on this tumbling earth I have a website on which I occasionaly write stuff. I recently added a review of my Koko-BA-experience. Since this has BA relevance, I thought it would be nice to share the part of BA in Koko with you guys. Because English is so not my native language the text is probably full of errors - feel free to make your comments. Always happy to learn.

BTW: this is not me promoting the site, just referring to it as 'context'.

The part of the review:

"I did enjoy my London trip a lot. I mean, yes I can be bothered by all sorts of details but in se, I am able to let things go and submerge myself to pictures, odeurs, panorama’s and food. The main reason for my presence here was yet to come: I had a ticket for Brett’s gig at Koko!

Despite the fact that I’ve been listening to Suede music for about 18 years (with pauzes, not exclusively thank God) I’ve never attended a concert of the band. I wanted to for a long time but all sorts of reasons stood between me and actually seeing them live. The worst thing in this matter was that I found out about their reunion one month AFTER they performed in Amsterdam… It could have been a birthday to remember for the rest of my life, but no – I was still in the dark at that point. So that’s why going to Brett’s solo concert meant so much to me: hearing and seeing the man who’s voice and words are in my head since the early ’90s, LIVE.

He was brilliant that night. Full of energy – both giving and (seemingly) receiving from the interaction with the audience. I enjoyed the experience as a whole – standing close enough to actually see his face and observe the performance; To succumb to the flow of being part of the audience-battery: invisible, safe, a slave to my needs to escape the world outside the doors of the building; To mentally frame this event in the corners of my mind. I left the performance high on energy jumping and smiling all the way back to my hotel. I didn’t even mind the tube-travellers looking at me. For I was drugged by happiness and refused to open my eyes for anything else but being there.

Thank you Brett."

"There comes a time in everyone's life when you wake up in the morning, look yourself in the mirror and ask (just audibly, more an exhalation than an outburst): "I wonder what the devil that Brett Anderson from the band Suede has been listening to? What has he read? Where has visited?" (For me this is sometimes followed by: "Oh good. That bout of Athletes Foot has started to clear up"/"I really should clean this bathroom cabinet" but that's just me and not really relevant here).

DAVID HOCKNEY R.A - A BIGGER PICTURE (11 replies)

...In which the Royal Academy invites you to inspect the fruits of a selection of Hockney’s landscapes, handpicked from a fifty-year period, as well as ‘ipad drawings’ and an audio-visual presentation.

The exhibition’s sub-title is enough to worry you...“A Bigger Picture”. Vast scale has no bearing on considerations of quality. Neither does sheer quantity. Bludgeoning the general public into submission with an interminable procession of gaudy canvasses depicting a variety of landscapes, from the Grand Canyon to his native Yorkshire, Hockney packs the massive spaces of the Royal Academy with one lazily tossed-off effort after the other, presumably in an effort to consolidate his position as one of Britain’s foremost living painters.

This is a disastrously complacent, grotesquely sycophantic exhibition. It’s littered with self-aggrandising references (both in the accompanying literature and within the work) to Monet and Van Gogh but has nothing of Vincent’s astute and discriminating choice of subject nor Monet’s rigorous, disciplined investigation. On the contrary, so much here looks wilfully cack-handed and clumsy - a virtual compendium of ‘bad painting’ techniques. The predominant palette for these landscapes is comprised of the gaudiest, most super-saturated, retina-melting colour you’ll ever witness. The brushwork, meanwhile, is flaccid, slapdash and daubed. A number of questions instantly arise: is this clumsiness and vulgarity deliberate and ‘faux-naive’? If so - Why? And more importantly, why is an artist of David Hockney’s stature re-heating Impressionist concerns which were comprehensively addressed more than a century ago?

Many of the ridiculously vast paintings are assemblages of numerous smaller panels, cobbled together to form a coherent whole. This smacks of gimmickry. Hockney’s point may be that the eye ‘sees’ the world in intimately related small sections, leaving the brain to compose and assemble a comprehensible impression but the concept only bears fruit in an enormous montage of LCD screens, displaying cleverly choreographed scenes filmed with an array of cameras.

A good exhibition, much like a classic album, brings with it a sense of Manifesto. The lack of that feeling of serious purpose is probably this show’s biggest failing. There’s little sense of any committed enquiry into the subject. His series of ‘re-interpretations’ of Claude Lorrain’s ‘Sermon on the Mount’ take the show to a new level of embarrassment. These are grotesque parodies, juvenile travesties and entirely symptomatic of the lack of any abiding ‘editorial’ principle in the show. Only a ‘national treasure’ could be indulged in such an obsequious and obeisant manner.

Toward the end of the show, Hockney presents his ‘ipad’ sketches; both on a series of wall-mounted ipads and in large-scale print form. Yes, he’s clearly achieved a vaguely impressive ‘mastery’ of this “new” digital medium. But artists have been exploiting the possibilities of Photoshop, Illustrator, Painter, CorelDraw et al for a decades. So, once again, nothing new is brought to the table and the stale whiff of modish gimmickry is in the air.

If you’re prepared to sift through the dross, much of which would never even pass muster (as Brian Sewell has already pointed out) at the R.A Summer Show then you’ll find a few gems - from concise little sketchbook studies to intricate, well-observed charcoal drawings. Irritatingly, they’re often tucked away in glass cases or otherwise drowned in the ocean of mediocrity.

While my full weight (just under ten and a half stone as you’re asking) is firmly on my Soapbox, I’ll state that GOOD ART (of whatever kind) is always incisive, urgent, taut and lean. ‘David Hockney R.A: A Bigger Picture’ is fundamentally banal, flabby, toothless and flatulent.

See this unaccountably sold out show if and when you can lay your hands on a ticket.

Andy
