i am working with musician/producer Leo Abrahams on the next record. we have written a whole bundle of stuff already and the chemistry seems to be fizzing away nicely. what does it sound like?.. well nothing like Wilderness, or like the first record for that matter... I guess if there's one musical theme that unites the songs it's a sense of atmosphere. Leo has a worked a lot on film soundtracks and it was that kind of mood that i was hoping to evoke when i approached him to work with me. the sound is forming slowly and shaping up to be a lot fuller than the last record but nevertheless laced with moments of stillness and calm .we are using less piano and strings and more woodwind and guitar.there are meandering instrumental passages and musical places i wouldn't normally be able to visit if i was working completely on my own.i suppose lyrically the songs are less romantic and more veiled than the last couple of records. i've been thinking a lot about that Francis Bacon quote about it being the artist's job to deepen the mystery. this time i want to hint at things rather than exhaustively detail them, create fragmants for people to guess at.

i would love to release the record this year and that is my vague plan but it at the moment all i can say is that it will be finished when it's ready.

morning brett :)
this definitely sounds intriguing.
i'll be late to work now, but anyway, i do hope we will be able to hear your new songs this year, but as you know, we are quite patient, so take your time on the new masterpiece :)
*curious*

This is great news. In the fast event society we live in today the majority of the musicians seems to gear towards easily digested stuff neatly packaged and easily understood. Even when a record is supposed to be confrontational, the provocations are immediate and easily understood as part of the package. There are a few artists who don't buy into this (one example would be Scott Walker) and I'm happy you seem to elevate to their level.

It's very easy to make money out of the expected but it's very hard to make money out of intellectual side of music these days. So it's a brave move you started with Wilderness and seem to want to continue with the next album. I can only applaud it because no matter how commercially successful you will be, it probably will be a progress for you as an artist. And as a fan I love when my musical heroes take risks and I hate the fact that so few dare to do that. After all being creative is one of the few areas of life were you can crash your plane and walk away from it relatively unharmed.

Thanks for sharing this info Brett. Can't wait to hear the result. Sounds very interesting :-)

Thanks for the update, Brett! :)

Curious me is wondering if you're thinking about making any more musicvideos (from Wilderness or the new record)?
I was looking at the Love Is Dead video last night, and it's a lovely video and I was thinking 'I hope he makes more!'

sort out the dot titles man... I'm not young anymore and there's a very subtle tremor to the hand these days, makes mouse navigation an ever increasing dilemma.

seriously though, good call. Can't serve a better apprenticeship than working under David Holmes if it's movie soundscape you're aiming for. I'm anticipating this'll be as close as I'll get to hearing my dream pairing of you and an Ennio Morricone type on record... genuinely intrigued and excited. Hope it all goes well.

And the new Minder is a total pile of old mans wank. How could they?

Hm, now I'm curious. You always keep me interested by changing your style again and again. I love it and also admire you for it.

It's so much fun being a Brett Anderson fan- haha...such a cool line. Or not. Ahem.

Have a lovely Wednesday anyway.
X.

hello brett,

thank you for the update – great news for my lunch break :)

this sounds very interesting.

it’s kind of hard for me to imagine how the album will sound like thinking of guitar and windwood, because there are so many possibilities(!) and I have to admit I haven’t heared of Leo Abrahams yet so I don’t know what his style is (as many film composers mostly have a certain style).
but well I always like surprises the idea you describe definitely sounds intriguing like kate already said.

i’m also excited about the lyrics and it’ll surely be very interesting for us then to interpret them and to explore not only what you wanted to express you but also what they mean to us.

so i’m more than excited and look forward to hearing more from you and the music. take your time till you think you are ready and all the best from me.

Good!!!!!!!! I won't be able to use the ' I fall asleep with Brett Anderson' line anymore. I was getting bored of it.

Does this mean I now can aline my chakra's?? Cause my left hand doesn't now what my right hand is doing at the minute. And I seem to be chasing my arse every two minutes!

i suppose lyricallythe songs are less romantic

Good cause you made me feel bloody miserable singing about love. No one loves me. Even my ex/best mate has stopped sending me wind up valentine cards.

Just don't take as long as the Stone Roses or Guns and Roses.

Im sure whatever you are working on will be inspiring to you, the people who you are working with and the people who in the end will hear it. No doubt you will go through lots of new experiences and journeys and wish you all the best.

Good luck

linda :-)x

P.S sold anymore Wilderness albums in Lincolnshire lately?????? Thought I keep you going through the rescession.

thanks for the update brett, your music has always had a cinematic quality to me so this type of collaboration seems almost inevitable. I can't wait to hear the results. Keep well :)

I am glad to hear Brett is using more guitars and less piano.
The guitar is more pop/rock than the piano, which is rather classical.

i dont know about the guitar being more pop rock since their is classical guitar and with all of the woodwinds it makes me think more mideval which sounds interesting. im kinda sad about the romantic lyrics taking a back seat though. theirs so much mystery in everything that i think anything of quality will already contain an air of mystery by its sheer uniqueness. i dont really line up to bacons thoughts on the obligations of an artist though i do like the way his book of essays all start with "of". of nobility, of love, of friendship. i get kinda scared when people use the word atmospere cause it can be vauge. on the other hand i thought his last album had a lot of atmosphere so who knows.

I LOVE the feeling of knowing that there is yet another Brett-record in the making. Woodwind, guitars, your voice and a soundtrack feeling...it's too good to be true.

And this time around I will get it signed by you, if I can work up the nerve...

The best of luck, and I really hope we'll get to hear it this year.

I mean, what will the "Vision 2020 - The right to sight" say?

I don't know...but organisations like that have a tendency to open up a lot of cans of grief for no purpose.

I must say I don't always agree on the choices Brett makes. But it always results in some great songs, so I trust you Brett. Do your thing. :)

Thanks for keeping us posted Brett.
The new direction does sound very interesting.
I was hoping you'll grant us something more musically complex to sink our ears in.
Love the ambition to get it out this year.
That'll be great.

Hey Brett,

Working with a musician/producer sounds like a great idea...I just hope it sounds more like your Fred Ball Pleasure work and NOT as atmospheric as Eno's introducing the band...

Yeah,,cheers to those who appreciate that Eno version but I just couldnt.

And one more thing that I have to get off my chest again.,. stop pratting about like your 90 years old...youre not that old...your brett f'in anderson ..style and swagger...

If I get a boring 90 year old senior citizen woodwind elevator music afternoon nap inducing album...I'll ...well...oh fine, you got me...I'll still buy 10 copies at the nursing home and show up to the gigs with a walker....woodwinds?
