please, please, please don't open the present too soon
Date: January 07, 2007 11:32AM
i know it sounds nostalgic , but i remember when the release date of a record meant something. i remember shuffling off down to Rounder Records in Burgess Hill with my £7.99 and buying the Queen Is Dead. i remember hurrying home with the sacred item and smuggling it up to my bedroom like a copy of Mayfair. i remember playing it and playing it and playing it and learning the words and burning the melodies into my head. i remember when the release date of a record meant something.

so i suppose we are merely weeks away from the inevitable leak. the last two records i have made have been horribly spoiled by this 21st century downer. all of the sense of drama and expectation ruined by a grubby little link to a grubby little site where you can get bored of the music 2 months early .

i suppose what i am trying to say is ,if there is anyone out there who 'comes across' my album before March 26th please, please, please, if you have any regard for me and the music i make, keep it to yourself. i can understand that there is a thrilling frisson of power in being 'the one with the album' but just stop and think about the damaging consequences to me the artist and it's effect on the big picture. before you start thinking that i am moaning about loss of royalties through illegal downloads i am not. i just want March 26th to be special. after that ,i don't give a monkeys if i don't get a penny from the sales of the album. i will still know it is a truly great record.

i like to think that you lot are generally a bunch of sensitive and intelligent people and so i appeal to your compassion and have faith in your judgement.

x Brett

I promise you Brett:

I would and could never download your album. For me march 26, 2007 is also a very special day. Like a birthday.

Cannot wait to hear the new songs in London in March.

...and please come to Denmark for a couple of shows Brett!

Train Aarhus and Vega Copenhagen would be just fine. And you should probably try Rytmeposten in Odense. At the moment they're building a fine new concert hall at Rytmeposten that will be opened very soon.

'...all of the sense of drama and expectation ruined by a grubby little link to a grubby little site where you can get bored of the music 2 months early . '

To be fair, if people are likely to get bored of the music after two months, then you've not done your job properly!

My own view is that, though I rarely download anything myself, downloading is fine so long as you stick as closely to the wishes of the band as possible and purchase the stuff you actually like. I hate the mentality of some hipster types who think they are owed free music because of their heightened sense of artistic sensibilities.

It shouldn't be about being able to say you've listened to everything ever, or about being first to hear and appreciate/dismiss an album. Those who boast about such things are in the same league as genitally deficient men who feel the need to buy speedboats and ferraris to prop up their lack of self worth.

definitely with you on that one, Brett. It makes an album more special for a fan to buy it on release date.
my own principle is: I listen to one artist's current album until new material by them is released. As your last published music is with The Tears, I'll listen to that album if I want to hear you and then I'll move on to your new album when it's out.

When it comes to the artists that I really love, I never download the music on the net, I go and buy the record.
March 26 is marked in my calendar, and I expect the busride home from town will seem endlessly long.
I can't wait to hear your record, Brett, I've been counting the days since the release date was official.
And thank you Brett, for taking the time to come here and share your thoughts, or update us on whats going on. It's much appreciated :)
Hugs

anyway! i told my friend exactly what u said.

how i love the smell of the cover of the cd when rip off the nylon and u put it on ur good quality stereo instead of those cheap speakers of the pc.

i salute you Mr Anderson.

p.s. Robbie is a weakness of mine, im sorry...its like watching eastenders- u know its wrong but u do it anyway.

Brett,
I always wait for the release date of my favourite artists' albums, cos, as you said, the release date is such a special day with so many emotions involved and personally I don't want to spoil all that. It was nice for you to share some of your new material on youtube and it's already enough for me. And if I ever find your new music somewhere before that, I'll keep it to myself, promise.

I will hold out. I will not go out of my way to find the music before the release date.... unless someone temps me, makes it dead easy! (I am terribly impulsive I'm afraid.)

£7.99 for the Queen is Dead? A rip off if you ask me. I can sell you a copy of it for a £1.

i'll do my best not to listen to your the album when it comes out, and not before. but embrace technology though brett in this fantastic new century...xbox 360, hi def tellies, mobile phones with vibrate function, electric self cleaning shavers, messengers, everything is brilliant.

ooo sweet talkin' will get you everywhere ;) here in trinidad sadly release dates are meaningless as things never reach us in time, and very limited stock, mostly top 40...

i hope that there will be pre-order options so that i can partake in the excitement at the same time as the european and stateside forum members :)

Well, I never go looking for new music by my favourite artists anywhere else then the shops. I mean, if something isn't released yet I usually don't go out looking for it with some peer 2 peer program. In this case, since you asked, Brett, I surely will make my way to the record store on March the 26th. Can't wait ;) *takes effort*

I do promise that I will never try to find any song on the Internet no matter how desperately I want to hear your new songs before 26th March. I agree that the release date mean something. I don't like people spreading unreleased songs illegaly. Especially in terms of your record, it has to be special. Therefore I will be happy to wait until it will be officially released. I believe that the record must seem to be much more precious after a long waiting with patience. :)

Tuluum,

get in touch with these people, they ship world-wide. What you need to tell them is if they can order a record for you that is distributed by V2
hope this helps
