We had a muslim family friend who also thought dogs were dirty and when he came over, we had to put our dogs in a bedroom.

I wouldn't be friends with someone who though dogs were unclean. Dogs are awesome.

Don't the rights of the elderly and handicapped in Britain trump the religious views of public servants (bus drivers)?

Wish I had been on the bus when this happened. They wouldn't have heard the end of me....

There are so many examples of religion gone mad.

What is likely to happen is that this zealot bus driver will be investigated and hopefully fined/sacked/suspended for his behaviour towards a member of the public - and his offense is aggravating because it is directed against a vulnerable person.

zealots will object just to anything really in the name of religion.

Sorry, that 73 yr probably doesn't feel the same. It would be very distressing I would think to someone in his position to be treated like that.

Travelling by public transport may result in social friction between the passengers because of various beliefs, attitudes, character and prejudice. So that blind passenger does not need to worry about his fellow passengers. Plus according to the church leader, it's not a big deal. If the bus-driver refuses a guide-dog then he is directly against company rules and if he is not prepared of serving the public then should not be working as a bus-driver in the first place. The taxi driver, well, the best way of making him understand the issue is to phone his company and report him - if the company has sense, they'll reprimand him or even sack him.

Imagine if a devout person was working in a public library and refusing to deal with material that is not in harmony with their belief. You would think that this person has chosen the wrong job.

If a bus passenger was called a cunt by two different bus drivers, over a period of two years, I would not cite this as evidence that there was a serious problem with bus drivers calling people cunts. Even though it isn't nice to be called a cunt.

ok, if it's not about bus drivers in general, just sack the guy.

The article says that Mr Norman Baker, the transport minister
is dealing with this matter of discrimination. He needs to find out how many complaints of similar nature have been made to see if this is a widespread attitude or just a few busdrivers being bigotted. If this is widespread, then they will need to discuss this issue at community level, if it's a personal issue, then the busdriver should get notification of their behaviour and dealt with individually.

Surely, busdriver and taxi-drivers do receive training to serve all members of the community? And surely those who refuse to do serve all members of the public, they should not get the job in the first place?

Can't remember where I read that some group of muslims consider dogs as the animal form of the devil or something...but I'm not sure.

Furthermore, Islam culture says to respect animals, including dogs. Islamic people use dogs not as pets but as working animals. You can argue that a guide-dog is a working animal that is doing its job for its owner. Someone who knows religious acts of kindness will appreciate that letting a blind man with his working dog go from A to B is an act of kindness.

The religious argumentation that this driver uses does not work.

Thank goodness we have such learned scholars of Islam here.

On the other hand, if someone boards a bus with the fierce Cerberus or the Hound of the Baskerville telling that this beast is doing a job, they would not have much of a ground to stand on because busdrivers are not compelled to take dangerous or antisocial elements on board.

How do you KNOW these things??

This is how you challenge religious bigotry - by finding argumentation within religion and understanding social identities. Any community group will tell you that.

Dogs are not a big deal in Islam, Matti. At least not with most Muslims living in Europe. Certainly not guide dogs.

Plus, the UK government had a minister called David Blunkett with a guide dog and I can't remember him having problems with other politicians in the UK or abroad because of his dog.

Islam is more concerned about belief and prayers, and telling followers to clean their hands, go on pilgrimages etc than banning dogs.

It's a bit like a Christian going all fire and brimstone because of Friday 13th. But you will find superstituous people who cross themselves when they see a black cat, and some superstitious Muslims don't like black dogs. Superstition has Pagan origins that predate established religion.

This may come as a shock to some but I actually know Muslim people who 1) like Suede and 2) have little dogs.
